Good News for Fans of Bathroom Humor

To the joy of millions of young readers and the consternation of untold numbers of foes of the “poop fiction” genre, a spinoff of the Captain Underpants series will be released in August, Scholastic announced on Thursday. “The Adventures of Ook and Gluk, Kung-Fu Cavemen From the Future,” by Dav Pilkey, is the first in a four-book deal. In the graphic novel, “written” by the fictional characters George Beard and Harold Hutchins, Ook and Gluk are caveboys in Ohio in 500,001 B.C. who battle an evil corporation from the future and wind up in A.D. 2222. “I think fans of Captain Underpants will be very happy with this new book,” Mr. Pilkey said in a written statement. “It has all the action, laffs and ridiculousness that children love, plus all the unapologetic irreverence and questionable potty humor that grumpy curmudgeons love to complain about.” While Captain Underpants will not appear in the first book, he will be in two of the four, Scholastic said. Tracy van Straaten, vice president for publicity at Scholastic, said the first book would have a printing of one million copies, joining 45 million copies in print of Mr. Pilkey’s eight Captain Underpants books, featuring a superhero in briefs and a red cape. First out in 1997, the books became best sellers despite complaints by some parents and educators about their bathroom humor.
