GLOBAL CROSSING PLANS TO REDUCE WORK FORCE BY 15%

Date: 09 October 2004

By Bloomberg News

Bloomberg News

Global Crossing, operator of a fiber optic network spanning 100,000 miles in 27 countries, said yesterday that it planned to reduce its work force by 15 percent to help stem losses as falling long-distance prices drive down sales. The company, based in Florham Park, N.J., said in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that local and long-distance services would be cut, costing about 600 jobs. Global Crossing said that the planned reductions, to be completed by March 2005, would save $40 million to $45 million a year. The company said that its loss in the first half widened to $223 million, or $10.23 a share, compared with $124 million, or 14 cents, a year earlier. Sales dropped 9.5 percent, to $1.34 billion from $1.48 billion.
