Reuters Joins Fox in Venture

Haitian TV Reporters Strike Over Official Meddling

After enduring military censorship and harassment for three years at their old jobs, newly hired reporters at Haitian National Television were expecting the restoration of President Jean-Bertrand Aristide and of democratic rule to usher in a new era of serenity. Instead, the state-run network was plunged into turmoil after the Government dismissed its director early in January, and the news staff walked out in protest. The reporters and technicians are protesting what they describe as political interference in news broadcasts by the Ministry of Information. They complain that the Aristide administration, like every other Haitian Government in living memory, has sought to manipulate and control news coverage at the official Government network, known by the French and Creole initials T.N.H.

SIEMENS AGREES TO PURCHASE PYRAMID TECHNOLOGY

Siemens A.G. said yesterday that it had agreed to buy the struggling mainframe computer maker the Pyramid Technology Corporation for $16 a share, or about $207 million. The price is 2.5 percent higher than the $202 million Siemens offered on Jan. 9. The tender offer, already approved by Pyramid's board, is set to start no later than Friday. Siemens already owns about 17 percent of Pyramid and has a warrant to acquire an additional 7 percent. Shares of Pyramid rose 87.5 cents yesterday, to $15.75, in Nasdaq trading of almost 4.2 million shares.

British Executive Resigns

The Prudential Corporation said its chief executive, Mick Newmarch, had resigned after almost a yearlong dispute with British regulators over tighter control of the British life insurance industry. Mr. Newmarch's departure from Britain's largest life insurance company followed questions from the London Stock Exchange about recent personal share transactions.

Mutual Funds At Ohio Bank

G.M. Pact Is Approved

Workers at a key General Motors Corporation parts plant here approved a new contract today, officially ending a three-day strike that caused 10 other G.M. plants to halt assembly work and component production. The contract, approved by a margin of 96 percent, calls for G.M. to hire about 600 extra workers at the AC Delco Electronics East plant in Flint. G.M. also agreed to spend about $70 million at the factory through 1998 to produce new parts there, said United Auto Workers officials familiar with the pact.

Sale to Pfizer Is Completed

Pfizer Inc. has completed its purchase of SmithKline Beecham P.L.C.'s animal health business for $1.45 billion. The purchase, first announced on Nov. 23, will reduce Pfizer's dependence on pharmaceuticals and create the world's largest provider of animal health products, with yearly sales of $1.2 billion. It also represents a departure from Pfizer's five-year strategy of selling businesses.

Hewlett Wins Navy Contract

The Hewlett-Packard Company said last week that it had won a $672.6 million contract from the Navy to provide computers and other products and services. Under the multiyear agreement -- its biggest military contract ever -- Hewlett-Packard will provide the Navy with as many as 23,000 servers and work stations as well as peripherals software training and support. Hewlett-Packard will be the primary contractor and program manager for the Tactical Advanced Computer program.

Broker Suit Is Dropped

Paine Webber has dropped a lawsuit that charged a rival, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, with planning to raid brokers Paine Webber had hired from Kidder, Peabody. Paine Webber sued Donaldson and another brokerage firm, Dean Witter Reynolds, in October, saying the firms planned to raid brokers whom Paine Webber had hired after it bought assets of Kidder, Peabody last year and took on about 1,000 of its brokers.
