Daily News And Columnist Differ and Split

Earl Caldwell and The Daily News, for which he has written a column for 15 years, have apparently parted ways over the refusal of the newspaper to publish an op-ed page column he wrote last week on a long investigation of allegations that a Queens police officer had raped five or more livery van drivers. Mr. Caldwell said yesterday that he was dismissed Tuesday by Arthur Browne, editor of the editorial page, in a heated dispute over the column, which named the officer and said he was "still on the job" despite an inquiry more than a year old. The column said the victims were black and quoted a lawyer and a minister as saying they suspected a racially motivated police coverup in the case.

HARRIS OF CHICAGO TO BUY SUBURBAN BANCORP

Harris Bankcorp, the Chicago-based unit of Bank of Montreal, signed a definitive agreement yesterday to acquire Suburban Bancorp of Palatine, Ill., in a stock swap valued at about $246 million. Under the transaction, each share of Suburban Bancorp will be exchanged for 3.9352 shares of Bank of Montreal. The transaction values Suburban's shares at about $73 each. The Gerald F. Fitzgerald family, which owns a majority of Suburban's shares, has agreed to vote in favor of the transaction, Bank of Montreal said. Suburban's shares were up $1 at $49.50 in Nasdaq trading. Suburban Bancorp has 30 branches in metropolitan Chicago and $1.36 billion in assets.

WELLFLEET GAINS ON BETTER-THAN-EXPECTED EARNINGS

The shares of Wellfleet Communications rose 7 percent yesterday after the company posted better-than-expected third-quarter earnings late Thursday and declared a 2-for-1 stock split. Shares rose $5, to $70, in Nasdaq trading. Wellfleet's stock is to split, effective May 13, to shareholders of record on April 22. The split will be issued in the form of a common stock dividend. Wellfleet, based in Billerica, Mass., makes computer networking products.

BOARD OF FIBREBOARD REJECTS NEW BID BY POHLAD GROUP

The Fibreboard Corporation said yesterday that its board had rejected the new bid of $45 a share for the company submitted by a group led by the financier Carl Pohlad. The board replied to Mr. Pohlad, the owner of the Minnesota Twins baseball club, in a letter saying that the sale of the company "at this time is not in the best interests of shareholders." The offer is valued at $187.7 million. In March, Mr. Pohlad offered to buy Fibreboard, a wood products company based in Walnut Creek, Calif., for $42.50 a share, but that offer was also turned down. Mr. Pohlad's group acquired a 6.8 percent stake in the company last November and December and disclosed it would seek to buy Fibreboard in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. In New York Stock Exchange trading, Fibreboard's stock closed yesterday unchanged at $38.

AKZO NOBEL SELLS DUTCH CHEMICALS UNIT TO ALLIED SIGNAL

Akzo Nobel N.V. said yesterday that it had sold its Dutch fluor chemicals plant to Allied Signal Inc. of Morristown, N.J., for an undisclosed amount. The plant, based in the southeastern Dutch town of Weert, produces hydrogen fluoride and chlorofluorocarbons, or CFC's. Its 70 employees will now become part of Allied Signal's work force. Allied Signal is already a global market leader in the production of hydrogen fluoride and CFC substitutes. Akzo Nobel, a leading international chemical company, said fluor chemical activities no longer formed part of its key operations.

New CMS Power Plant

The CMS Energy Corporation's CMS Generation Company subsidiary has begun construction of a 35-megawatt wood-burning power plant near Flint, Mich. The $90 million Genesee Power Station, which is intended to burn up to 175,000 tons of recycled waste wood a year, is 50 percent owned by CMS Generation. The remainder is owned by the Black & Veatch Power Development Corporation and the Genesee Power Company. The plant will sell its entire output to the Consumers Power Company, which is Michigan's largest utility and a CMS Energy unit.

Consumer Confidence Up

Consumer confidence rebounded in early April, indicating that rising interest rates are not curtailing people's spending plans. The University of Michigan's preliminary consumer sentiment index for April rose to 94.2, from 91.5 in March, according to people with access to the survey. February's reading was 92.3.
