News Cameras in Courts? New York's Law Disputed

The experimental law that allowed cameras into New York State's courtrooms -- and dramatic footage of criminal trials into millions of living rooms -- expires this week, with the law's future in dispute. The dispute centers on a provision in a State Senate bill that would extend the law but would not allow news organizations to videotape or photograph some witnesses during testimony unless the witnesses agreed. Many news organizations say that would sharply curtail their ability to cover a trial. The Assembly version of the bill, reflecting current law, would not set such a limit.

Americans are only beginning to realize that when they call a newspaper's sports line to get a score or send for a free brochure about car maintenance, they are probably also entering a data bank as a prospect for advertising about golf clubs or tires.

Iraq Appoints Oil Minister

Iraq has appointed its first full-time oil minister since October, the Iraqi News Agency reported today. The new minister, Usama Abdel-Razzaq, was a minister of state for oil in the Government formed by Prime Minister Saadoun Hammadi in March.

Harrelson Answers Critics On His Handling of Team

Mets Manager Bud Harrelson today calmly and confidently addressed the issue of his job security and defended his laissez-faire handling of the team's emotionally tumultuous and otherwise embarrassing weekend at Shea Stadium. "I came in with a smile, and I'll go out with a smile," said Harrelson, whose team began a three-game series here against the Cubs having lost six of its last eight games, the last two to the St. Louis Cardinals by a combined score of 21-6. "Do I want to be fired? Absolutely not. Do I think I'll be fired? Absolutely not."

Pessimism On Survival of Pan Am

Transportation Secretary Samuel K. Skinner said today that he was "not overly optimistic" that Pan American World Airways would survive and that he hoped it would be taken over by another airline. In an interview on the NBC News program "Meet the Press," Mr. Skinner said he was more optimistic about Trans World Airlines. But he added that the loss of either airline would be unlikely to have a significant effect on the industry.

2,068 Receive Degrees at Brown University

Brown University conferred 1,519 undergraduate degrees and 549 advanced degrees yesterday at its 223d commencement exercises on the university's campus in Providence, R.I. Following a longstanding tradition at Brown, there was no main commencement speaker. But several people, including students, made short speeches throughout the ceremony.
