LEAD: Encouraging economic reports sent the dollar soaring. The U.S. trade deficit rose slightly in May, to $10.93 billion. Although higher than the revised $10.3 billion of April, it was the second-smallest imbalance in almost three years. Imports rose 3.4 percent, to $37.6 billion, while exports also increased 2.3 percent, to $26.6 billion.
