Democracy Enlarged; Also Polluted ; Cheating the Voters on the Evening News

Date: 05 April 1984

Sometimes, to those of us in the print branch of the news business, television can be an exasperating cousin. We share many interests and problems with TV news and just two days ago advocated freeing its political coverage from Government regulation. But that very night, election night in New York - and hours before the polls closed - the networks were pronouncing magisterially that it was a big night for Walter Mondale. Don't they see this as an abuse of the vote? Don't they hear the properly angry reaction bubbling up around the country?

GENERATIONAL SQUEEZE HURT HART IN VOTING, POLL SHOWS

Date: 04 April 1984

By Hedrick Smith

A heavy vote among older whites for Walter F. Mondale and a surge of young black voters for the Rev. Jesse Jackson put a generational squeeze on Senator Gary Hart in the New York primary yesterday, according to a New York Times/CBS News poll. Mr. Mondale forged a crucial primary victory, his first in the Northeast, by pulling together a traditional Democratic coalition - Jewish and Catholic voters, union households, Hispanic and Italian-American voters, low-income groups and those who feel financially worse off this year than last. It followed the pattern of his earlier victories in states with high unemployment and economic pessimism among voters. 'A Good Leg Up' ''This validates Mondale's candidacy,'' commented Robert S. Strauss, the former Democratic Party national chairman. ''He clearly needed a good Northeastern win in a major state. Now, he has wins in the South, the Midwest - in Illinois - and the Northeast. This gives him a good leg up on the trophy, though it doesn't give him the trophy. It's still a very volatile campaign.''

FRANCE'S SOCIALISTS IN TROUBLE WITH THE LAW

Date: 05 April 1984

By John Vinocur

When an official document asserted that the Paris police force was no longer handling all its tasks effectively, Interior Minister Gaston Defferre could hardly deny its existence or contents. Instead, he ordered the removal of the chief of Paris detectives. Then Mr. Defferre, who is responsible for French law enforcement, took another but slightly less orthodox step last week. Raging against leaks and leakers, he closed down the 80-year-old press room at 36 Quai des Orf evres, the very real detective headquarters where Georges Simenon, over the last five decades, has sent his fictional Inspector Maigret to draw on his pipe and ponder human frailty.

A photographer and a reporter for The New York Post were arrested at Bellevue Hospital Center yesterday and held for seven hours after an argument with the hospital's security staff, officials of the city's Health and Hospitals Corporation said. James Walsh, a spokesman for the city's Health and Hospitals Corporation, said the Post employees were arrested by Bellevue security officers during an argument while victims of a building collapse at Delancey and Essex Streets were being brought to the hospital. The photographer, Michael Schwartz, was charged with assaulting two hospital guards, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment and getting in the way of an ambulance bringing in a patient, Mr. Walsh said. The reporter, Anne E. Murray, was charged with resisting arrest and obstruction of governmental administration, he added.

PRIMARY POLL: VOTERS ARE HAPPY WITH CUOMO AND, TO A LESSER EXTENT, KOCH

Date: 05 April 1984

By Frank Lynn

New York State residents who voted in the Democratic Presidential primary on Tuesday strongly approved the job performance of Governor Cuomo, according to a New York Times/CBS News Poll of primary voters. A smaller majority of city Democrats were favorable to Mayor Koch, the poll indicated. The Governor's performance was approved by 74 percent of the 2,016 Democrats surveyed at 75 polling places throughout the state. Mr. Koch was approved by 56 percent of the 729 Democrats polled in New York City after they voted. The ratings of the state's two leading and often competing Democrats reflected in many respects their impact on former Vice President Walter F. Mondale's victory over Senator Gary Hart and the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

Central America Out of Control

Date: 04 April 1984

Other countries are not blobs on a map; their people and traditions are not graphs and statistics. These truisms get lost whenever Americans invoke the grandiose themes of vital interest and hemisphere security. But Central America has sent up some startling reminders that the region's war games involve real people whom we cannot always fathom or control.
