INTERNATIONAL A3-10 U.S. Warns China of Harm In Spy Plane Standoff The Bush administration warned Beijing that its relationship with the United States risked further harm if the crew of a downed American spy plane remained in detention. Officials again firmly rejected the kind of apology China has demanded for the plane's collision with a Chinese fighter jet, and insisted that the United States would not give up its right to such eavesdropping flights. INTERNATIONAL 3-15 China Insists on More From U.S. in Plane Crisis China insisted that the United States has not done enough to end the crisis over the 24 Americans detained after their spy plane made an emergency landing. While negotiations continued to find a way out of the standoff, official propaganda in China both reflected popular anger and kept it ratcheted high. A letter from Chinese officials explained their position. 1 Two American diplomats began a third meeting with the detained crew. They think, 'Oh, my God, my son is going to die.' Their world stops. But during that hour and a half that I sit with them, we go into the nuances of treatment and cure. I give families news in a sequence starting from the test results that confirm the diagnosis -- in this case leukemia. I give them information about the particular type of leukemia, give the treatment plan and go back and reiterate. The quote-unquote bad news I mention once or twice and mention the good news five, six or eight times so that's what they'll walk away with. Today we can offer children a cure rate that approaches 85 percent. I try not to allow any thoughts of that 15 percent to creep in. I am hopeful. That's what I want to convey.
